TONIGHT: "Teaching Creative Writing in a Data Driven Age" with Mariel Howsepian Rodriguez
Mariel Howsepian-Rodriguez will visit ESU as part of the Creative Writing Program's Visiting Writers Series to discuss how we can integrate Creative Writing into classrooms to facilitate learning.
TONIGHT - Wednesday, March 28
5:00 PM
The Donald Reichardt Center for Publishing & Literary Arts, PH 304
"Fewer than 40% of Kansas students are on track to be academically prepared for college, community college or technical school as measured by their scores on the state's standardized math and English tests. Scores on English language arts tests went down for the second year in a row. About 38% of students scored proficient in that subject in spring 2017" ( "Test Scores Show Less Than Half of Kansas Students Learning What They Need For College").
It sounds bad, doesn't it? The majority of Kansas students can't read and write! Kansas isn't alone. The majority of students in the U.S. can't read and write, and this alarming data results in an increase in public school teachers "teaching to the test." Where does creative writing fit into this?
It doesn't.
But it can.
Mariel Howsepian-Rodriguez is a teacher at Brentwood Science Magnet Elementary School in Los Angeles, California, where she teaches English Language Learners. She is also a mentor teacher to Science Education students from UCLA. She holds a Post-MFA Certificate in Creative Writing Pedagogy from Antioch University, Los Angeles, as well as an MFA in Creative Nonfiction. In addition to teaching full-time, she and her husband homeschool their precocious six year old daughter using the Charlotte Mason method. Her writing has appeared in several California newspapers, including The Santa Monica Daily Press.

During the 1990s she obtained US citizenship and completed her Teaching and Leadership PhD program at KU.
