We as the Ethnic and Gender Studies Steering Committee seek to honor Justice Ginsburg’s work by collecting the ways in which her legacy lives on. We would like to know: how will you continue Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work? Email us at ethgen@emporia.edu. We’ll collect your responses and create a record of the lasting impact and continuation of RBG. This is open to all—students, faculty, staff, community.

Grief Support Group: First Aid for Broken Hearts

What's your grief? Author Alan D. Wolfelt says, "Hearts break for many reasons. All are real, valid, and painful."

According to Dr. Wolfelt, "heartbreakers" can include a death of a loved one, loss of pet, break-ups, lost or broken dreams, leaving home, abuse, just to name a few. Using guidance from his book, First Aid For Broken Hearts, you will find that you do not need to suffer grief all alone. Some people need to talk about their grief. Others may want to be private about their grief, but still be close with those who grieve. This is a space in which to honor your unique grief and to help with mending your heart.

To sign up, please go to Canvas and find this group under Counseling Services Resources: Grief Support Group: First Aid for Broken Hearts.

Immunity to Change-led by Dr. Gary Wyatt

A challenge we face each day is the difficulty in making and sustaining necessary changes in our personal lives, at work, and in our communities.  Whether it is breaking bad habits or keeping good ones, lasting change eludes the best of us.  Why is change so difficult?

You are invited to participate in a workshop scheduled via Zoom, for Thursday, October 1, at 3pm, led by Gary Wyatt, that explores what Harvard scholars Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey have identified as our Immunity to Change.  In this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to identify “hidden commitments” that are barriers to change and to develop strategies for overcoming them.

To get access to the training, email Jackie Lutz at jlutz@emporia.edu for the Zoom link.

Giovannie Hernandez/Hispanic Heritage Month speaker 9/23

Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with “College Behind Bars: A Chat with Giovannie Hernandez.” This event is 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, 9/23 via Zoom. Giovannie was featured in a 3-part PBS documentary that’s available on YouTube and on PBS.org. He’s excited to give an inspirational message and chat with our campus in a Q&A format.

Giovannie Hernandez ‘17 is an alum of the Bard Prison Initiative and one of the subjects of the Emmy-nominated PBS documentary College Behind Bars. Incarcerated at sixteen years old, he now uses this platform to speak about his experiences pursuing higher education in prison to help re-imagine our criminal justice system and support for the expansion of access to higher education for all. Since his release in 2016, Giovannie has worked with the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, New York Immigrant Freedom Fund, Good Shepherd Services, and Emergent Works serving disadvantaged communities and those impacted by incarceration. He intends to continue his studies and to dedicate his work to combating systems of inequity and injustice.

Registration is required.  Zoom link will be emailed to attendees following registration. You may also register on Hornet Life: https://emporia.campuslabs.com/engage/submitter/form/start/441605
