Banned Books Week, Sept 23-29
"Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them. If parents and kids can talk together, we won't have as much censorship because we won't have as much feat." Judy Blume
Books are usually banned with "the best intentions" to protect others from difficult ideas and information. The First Amendment of the Constitution guarantees our right to free speech, which includes the right to read and write books that might be considered by some to be offensive. Because this freedom is one of our fundamental rights, individuals should be free to read whatever they choose.
Celebrate Banned Books week by stopping by the ESU White Library to check out our display of banned books. Pick up a bookmark. Guess the titles of the books in a jar to win prizes.

Banned Books Week, Sept 23rd to Sept. 29th
Is an item challenged or banned? A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view, rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. Due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students, and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection.

Banned Books Week, Top Banned Book of 2017
The most challenged book of 2017 was Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why, a novel that has been a valuable tool in igniting conversations about suicide, bullying, and consent. The depiction of suicide was the primary reason for 2017 challenges. The book was also on the top ten list in 2012 for drug and alcohol use, sexual content, suicide, and being unsuited for age group.

Merchant Street Work Update
The City of Emporia will be starting, on September 24, 2018, a paving project on Merchant from 12th Avenue north to the Interstate turnoff. This part of the project is estimated to be completed by the mid-October. Due to Merchant Street being 2 and sometimes 3 lanes, one lane of traffic will be open as the work will be completed one lane at a time. Please watch for directions and be aware of the equipment and workers. This will disrupt access to parking lots and entries/exits to campus at different times during this time period. We will work on alternate routes on getting to the west parking lots as needed throughout the project.
Additionally, Westar (Evergy) will be starting on the relocation of the overhead power lines to underground service in October and will continue to March 2019. There should be little disruption to normal vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Most work will boring underground. There will be three above ground boxes that will need roping off during this work. Work will be from the intersection of Commercial Street and 12th Avenue west to the intersection of Merchant Street and 12th Avenue north to the Interstate turnoff.
More information will be posted as the project progresses.

Temporary Access To West Parking Lots During Merchant Street Pavement Project
Access to the west parking lots on campus (west of Cremer Hall, Science Hall, WAW Library and north of WAW Library) will be affected by the upcoming City of Emporia Pavement Project on Merchant Street. To accommodate this work we will temporarily be accessing the west lots by reversing the direction of travel through the parking lot north of WAW Library from east to west and have people drive through this lot from Kellogg Circle Drive. We will rope off the parking spaces in this lot (except for the Handicap Parking Spaces) so that people will not try to park backwards. We will temporarily relocate the Gold Permit parking spaces to the west and put them on existing metered spaces. A temporary access to west parking lot map will be distributed to help illustrate this.
All access roads to campus along Merchant Street will be affected by this project. We recommend that people should access the campus by way of Highland Street, Market Street and Kellogg Circle Drive off of 12th Avenue. For those who use the Interstate we recommend that you use the Burlingame exit to come to campus.
The City indicates that there will be only one lane traffic on Merchant during the project. This may mean that a pilot car will be used. So please follow the signs and directions that the contractor will put up. We encourage to use patience when you arrive and leave the campus and take into account extra time to navigate to and through campus. We've been through this a few times already and survived. We'll survive this also.
Thanks for your cooperation and assistance!
