FREE COVID-19 Testing for the Holidays

Lyon County Emergency Management and Lyon County Public Health is partnering with GoGetTested.com/Kansas to provide FREE COVID-19 tests as part of "Home for the Holidays" initiative.

In Lyon County, the free tests will be provided with a drive-through event at the county fairgrounds in Emporia. Testing begins Friday, Dec. 18 and continues through Dec. 30. Appointments are preferred and are booked online beginning Wednesday, Dec. 16 at http://www.gogettested.com/Kansas.

"Home for the Holidays" gives the opportunity to get tested before potentially being around family members and loved ones during the holiday season. With this limited time expansion, patients are not required to have medical necessity (i.e. symptoms, close contact, etc.). Additionally, no ID or insurance is required and there will be no out-of-pocket costs for those being tested.

Beginning Friday, Dec. 18, testing will be available Monday through Saturday, between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each day at the Lyon County Fairgrounds at 2650 U.S. Highway 50 in a drive-through manner.

Testing kits will be utilized on a first-come, first-serve basis and results will be available within 48-96 hours. Food, drink, or tobacco use is prohibited 30 minutes prior to testing. Enter Lyon County Fairgrounds from US-50 entrance.  See traffic flow image for more information.

The type of test administered is an FDA approved oral swab that tests for live virus through a lab-based Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) process.  This test detects RNA (or genetic material) that is specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and can detect the virus within days of infection, including those who may be asymptomatic.

Note: There are other testing sites across Kansas — also available at the GoGetTested website — if you are no longer in the Emporia area.

Seeking Present & Future Educators

The Emporia State University Special Collections and Archives department is working on February 2021’s Black History Month program where we will be exploring Black Emporia Educators from the past, present, and future. Our goal is to create a sharable virtual exhibit that highlights these educators and their experiences. For this program to be a success, we need to contact current and future Black educators. We will conduct oral histories with the educators, which will be incorporated into the oral history program of the Black Emporia Collection held here in ESU’s archives. This virtual exhibit will include the narratives of Black Educators of the past, oral histories of current Black educators, and for the future section, we are asking current students who are planning to be teachers to send in a brief video or written bio accompanied by photos of themselves. We are currently searching for recommendations for both the future and present sections. Interested participants should contact Jessica Shields (email below) for further information.

We are starting within the Hornet family; however, if you have recommendations for Black educators in Emporia’s public community, we would love to include their stories too. We are also searching for guest speakers for the program. This could look like a lecture, speech, or other prerecorded video relating to topics that connect with Black education. We are open to discussing other options or ideas you may have as long as it is informative and relates to the theme in some manner. We appreciate any and all ideas in this matter. If you have any questions, concerns, or recommendations please contact the Black Emporia Graduate Assistant, Jessica Shields, by email at jshield6@emproia.edu or by phone at (620) 341-6431. Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you.
