Flags at Half-Staff
Kansas surpassed 1,000 Kansas deaths due to COVID-19. In honor of the lives lost and the families they left behind, Governor Laura Kelly has directed that flags be lowered to half-staff throughout the state until sundown, Friday, October 30, 2020.
“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of 1,007 Kansans who lost their lives to COVID-19,” Governor Laura Kelly said Wednesday. “One of the many terrible impacts of this virus has been that families are unable to hold in-person services to mourn the passing of their loved ones. Each one of these Kansans was someone’s child, parent, or grandparent. They were part of a community. Today, I’m directing that flags be lowered to half-staff, so that we may honor and remember them.”

Grief Support Group: First Aid for Broken Hearts
What's your grief? Author Alan D. Wolfelt says, "Hearts break for many reasons. All are real, valid, and painful."
According to Dr. Wolfelt, "heartbreakers" can include a death of a loved one, loss of pet, break-ups, lost or broken dreams, leaving home, abuse, just to name a few. Using guidance from his book, First Aid For Broken Hearts, you will find that you do not need to suffer grief all alone. Some people need to talk about their grief. Others may want to be private about their grief, but still be close with those who grieve. This is a space in which to honor your unique grief and to help with mending your heart while connecting with others on campus.
To sign up, go to Canvas and find Counseling Services Resources. This open group will meet for 6 weeks from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm through Zoom.
Remaining Dates:
October 27
November 10
November 17
December 1
This group will be facilitated by Emporia Counseling Services staff. For questions, please contact Emily Reimer: ereimer2@emporia.edu.

ESU Special Collections and Archives presents a reading by Kansas author Julie Stielstra from her young adult novel Opulence, Kansas. When Katie Myrdal’s father is found dead in his Porsche, everything she thought she knew about her family is shaken. Her uncle Len and his wife Maggie—relatives she barely knew existed—show up at the funeral and offer an escape for the summer to their Kansas farm. Katie abandons her Chicago Gold Coast high-rise life to land beneath the wider skies of the prairie. Grappling with loss and disillusionment, Katie must forge new skills and new friendships in a small town called Opulence, a town holding secrets and riches she will need before she can go back home.
