Friday is Holiday

As many of us are working and studying from home, we know it isn’t always easy to remember what day it is!

We wanted to remind everyone that this Friday, July 3, is the federal and state holiday for the Fourth of July. Emporia State is not open. Those working from home will take a holiday, and there are no classes.

Enjoy the three-day weekend!

Starting July 2nd, groups will meet Thursday evenings at 7pm over Zoom. The final group of the summer will be July 23rd.

Interested? Email hwallac4@g.emporia.edu and I will provide you with the Zoom link and a handout of the activities.

Healthy Hornet Wellness Wednesday Highlight -- Social + Intellectual Wellness

Our final week of the Summer Healthy Hornet Challenge highlights Social and Intellectual Wellness.  Social Wellness refers to your ability to interact with people, respect yourself and others, develop meaningful relationships, contribute to your community, and develop quality communication skills. Intellectual Wellness is finding a way to engage in creative and stimulating activities that allow you to share your gifts and expand your knowledge. Below you can find a self assessment for Social and Intellectual Wellness!

If you score 0-5, you may notice that part of your life seems out-of-balance. If you score 6 or more, you may be feeling a general sense of well-being in that area.

Strongly Disagree = 0  |  Disagree = 1  |  Agree = 2  |  Strongly Agree = 3

SOCIAL WELLNESS SELF ASSESSMENT

1. I have a strong support system of multiple meaningful and mutually respectful relationships

2. I have interests and participate in activities that involve other people

3. At least once a week I’m in a setting where I feel comfortable and happy engaging in activities or conversation with others

INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS SELF ASSESSMENT

1. I am interested in learning new things

2. I enjoy attending lectures, plays, musical performances, museums, galleries, and/or libraries

3. I enjoy creative and stimulating mental activities/games

ESU Summer Theatre '20 presents A CHANGE OF PLANS beginning June 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Originally that was to be the night of the season opening production of “Pete ‘N’ Keely” featuring a company of ESU Theatre alums.  When the live productions were cancelled by the pandemic, the company got together for a devised virtual piece that will be available for streaming following the premiere.  The link to the performance is accessible at the ESU Theatre Arts Facebook page @ESUTheatre.

The production is a reflection on where we are today as a result of the pandemic and the death of George Floyd.  The show also represents the final production by Jim and Lindy Bartruff who complete their tenure at ESU this month.  The alumni cast includes Chris Lohkamp, Ben and Susie Williams, Won Song, Dylan Lewis, Aubrey Near and Marah Melvin McFadden. The show features material by various writers including Shakespeare, and Studs Terkel along with personal reflections by the cast.

Phishing Scams

Many folks at ESU are seeing phishing scams that seem to fit a particular pattern.  The scam looks something like this:

An email is received that says it is from someone in ESU's management structure.  It starts with something like "Are you Available" or "I need your assistance", usually in the Subject line. The message goes on to ask for a cell phone number to continue the conversation off-line.  Once the off-line communication channel is established, they will ask the recipient to do them a favor because they are "in a meeting and can't get out to make a phone call" or something to that effect.  Finally, they will typically ask for a cash card or gift card to be purchased on their behalf as "a gift for my granddaughter" or something like that. Once they have obtained the card number from the purchaser, they have the cash and it is not recoverable.

So what are some clues to look out for?  These scams usually come from an email address that tries to mimic the manager's actual email address or else tries to look like it could plausibly be from that individual.  Be suspicious of any non-ESU email address, especially those that look like they are trying to look like ESU accounts like "name.emporia.esu@gmail.com" or similar. Unfortunately, this clue may not be available if using the Outlook web client.

ALWAYS be suspicious of anyone asking for money.  If you receive an email request from someone you know asking for money or gift/cash cards, always contact them via a different means to verify that it is them making the request.  The reason this scam is popular is because it works. Many people will just take the request at face value.

If you receive an email like the one described above, please notify the Help Desk or ITSecurity so that we can get the warning out to other recipients. It is helpful that you forward a copy of the email to us so we can describe the details to others.  These emails are typically safe to open, but please do not interact with the sender until you are absolutely sure it is genuine.

Wellness Wednesday -- Healthy Hornet Challenge Weekly Wellness Highlight

With the Summer Healthy Hornet Challenge in full swing, we wanted to highlight the weekly dimensions through a Wellness Wednesday Hornet Announcement! Below you can find some info on this week’s dimension as well as links to the HHC Newsletter that will have additional information!

This upcoming week will focus on the dimensions of emotional and spiritual wellness. In this week's newsletter, we have highlighted some emotional and spiritual wellness tips to help with this. Emotional Wellness involves feeling positive and enthusiastic about ourselves and life, in general. The spiritual dimension involves the tolerance of values and beliefs of others and participating in activities that are consistent with personal values.
