Poetry Reading with Coffeetalk Q&A - Oct. 2, 7pm
Poet Philip Matthews will give a poetry reading, followed by a Q&A with Philip and photographer David Johnson about their photographic and poetic collaboration "Wig Heavier than a Boot" on Wednesday, October 2nd from 7:00-8:00 PM in the Memorial Union Admissions’ Lobby at Emporia State University.
"’Wig Heavier Than a Boot’ brings together photography by David Johnson and poetry by Philip Matthews. Revealing Petal—a drag consciousness as whom Philip manifests to write, and David photographs—the project crosses art-making rituals with isolated performances within domestic spaces and pastoral landscapes. Taken together, the resulting photographs and poems reveal dynamic relationships between author, character, and observer. By articulating a specific creative process in which one identity becomes two, the project in turn opens up a conversation about gender expression through an art-historical lens."
There will be coffee and hot cocoa served. This event is free and open to the public. Bring a friend!
The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity Student Programs; the Creative Writing Program; the Department of Art; and the ESU registered student organization PRIDE.

Brenda Tracy coming to ESU!
This year we are honored to bring Brenda Tracy to campus to share her experience and inspiring words with our community! In 1988, she was brutally raped by four men and it changed her life forever. Thankfully, her story did not end there. Today, Brenda is a mother, a registered nurse, an advocate and a survivor. Brenda Tracy has received national attention as a speaker and is considered one of the country’s most influential voices.
She has fought for improvements to our legal system and dedicated her efforts to enhance the lives of survivors. In Oregon, she worked closely with legislators to expand victim’s rights and successfully helped to pass seven laws benefiting survivors of sexual assault (including mandatory testing of all rape kits in the state and extending the Oregon Statute of Limitations to prosecute rape). Additionally, she served as a member on the NCAA Commission to combat sexual violence and has received numerous awards for her positive impact.
As the founder of a national ‘Set The Expectation’ campaign which focuses on education and awareness, Brenda travels the country to speak with university athletic programs to actively recruit administrators and athletes to join the fight against sexual violence. Her mission is to empower coaches to address their teams and let them know that sexual assault and physical violence will not be tolerated. She believes that together we can make a difference and prevent further abuse.

With midterms just around the corner, let us help you come up with a game plan for game day! We’ll explore study skills in general and how to beat test anxiety. Then, we’ll teach specific test taking skills. For instance, wouldn’t it be nice to know how to tackle an essay exam versus a multiple choice exam? What about oral and true/false exams? We’ll explore each of them and strategies for answering them. Attending this workshop will for sure increase your chances of doing better on midterms.
Come join us for this workshop on Thursday, September 19th from 11-11:30 a.m. in WAW Library, Seminar Room 222. Hope to see you there!

Flags at Half-Staff
In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, and in recognition of Patriot Day, September 11, 2019, Governor Laura Kelly has ordered flags throughout the State of Kansas to be flown at half-staff on September 11. President Donald J. Trump also issued a flag directive honoring Patriot Day as a day to remember the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
“Today, my thoughts are with all of the families and friends of those who were killed or injured during the attacks on September 11, 2001, including many first responders. They are in our hearts,” Kelly said. “But even as the resilience and unity of our country was challenged, our people rose up to meet that challenge. Thank you to all of our state’s first responders and emergency workers who continue to make our communities, our state and our country a better, safer place to live.”

We have a lot of exciting programs and events planned for the year.

We hope to see you there!
Volunteers Needed
We are looking for ESU volunteers to help with a project as “teacher leaders.” Each teacher leader will be in charge of five 5th graders on the following Mondays in VH330 from 12:30 – 3:00 (in case of inclement weather, we will travel to WAW Elementary):
September 16th
September 30th
October 14th (this date will be held at WAW Elementary)
October 28th
November 18th
December 2nd
Each teacher leader will oversee the same group of 5th graders each week. All supplies will be provided.
A short background on this project:
Mr. Jorge Britez (who is a teacher from Paraguay and IDT Grad Student) and Dr. Reed (EE/EC/SE Department) will co-teach the lessons. We will be partnering with Mrs. Ashlie Anno and Mrs. Ashley Conrade (both ESU alums) who teach 5th grade at William Allen White (WAW) Elementary. Our theme is kindness and we are using “Friends of Corky” as our project title. The 5th graders will be participating in lessons and writing about kindness. Each lesson will integrate Spanish and Guarani vocabulary related to the topic of kindness. We will use social media for the students to share their writing on the topic of kindness and post pics on our “Friends of Corky” demonstrating acts of kindness. At the same time, we will be connecting virtually to San Ignacio de Loyola School (SIL) in Asunción, Paraguay where Mr. Britez taught before coming to ESU. SIL English Coordinator, Katherine Segovia, will help us coordinate the 120 fifth-grade students who will join us online for the lessons virtually from Paraguay. Copies of Corky will be distributed to all students from both countries so they can post pics of “Flat Corky” to help each other learn about the two schools, countries, languages, and cultures. In the end, we will publish a collection of student writing related to kindness. In addition, we will select “Corky’s Best of the Best” multilingual stories to be published. This project will benefit our Spanish speakers at WAW in Emporia and our English speakers at SIL in Paraguay. We are very excited about this project and the opportunity to physically bring the two schools and countries together! In January or February, we will have a celebration of our writing and present a copy of the printed book to the students whose writing was chosen for publication. An electronic pdf will be made available with all of the student submissions.
Teacher leaders will assist with the activities, writing groups, serve on the selection committee, and help with our celebration. There will be no outside work required. Proficiency in the English language and writing is required. Spanish skills are helpful but not necessary to volunteer. We do ask that you commit to helping with all 6 sessions for consistency with the students.
