Nang Mo Lao was born in Hsipaw, Shan State, Burma after the close of World War II. She graduated from St. Anne’s Catholic Private High School in Taunggyi, one of the leading college preparatory schools in all of Burma in 1966, and began her university studies as a geography major. In 1970, she graduated from the University of Mandalay and entered the teacher training college in Taunggyi. She began teaching in the Burmese national system of schools in 1972, and continued there for 16 years when she was a high school teacher. She also completed her Bachelor of Education and Diploma in English at the University of Foreign Languages in Rangoon during these years. In 1986, she competed for a study abroad opportunity and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the USA. She began as TESL Master’s degree program at the University of Kansas in January 1987, but after a 1988 huge student revolt in Burma, was called by the Burmese government to return home without completing her degree. She refused to do so, and instead began a Specialist in Education and then a doctoral program at KU. During the 1990s she obtained US citizenship and completed her Teaching and Leadership PhD program at KU. She then took a MLS degree at Emporia and a second PhD at KU in Higher Educational Administration (student affairs).
