This 3 credit online course is designed to increase the student’s awareness, sensitivity, and understanding of the individual, social, cultural, political, and legal aspects of disability in our society. The class will provide students with a variety of opportunities to explore their own attitudes, values, and beliefs about persons with disabilities and other minority identities. A variety of instructional methods including discussion, lecture, multimedia, and experiential learning opportunities will be utilized to assist students to develop the following competencies:
1. Understand how disability has been conceptualized historically and the resulting impact on societal attitudes, values, and beliefs about persons with disabilities.
2. Analyze one’s own personal values, attitudes, and beliefs about persons with disabilities.
3. Define disability in global, social, legal, and political contexts and why disability is a diversity issue in our society.
4. Summarize current legislation and public policy that impact persons with disabilities, employers, educators, and society at large.
5. Describe how culture (race, ethnicity, gender, economic status, age, sexual orientation, and type of disability) interact and impact life experiences of persons with disabilities.
6. Describe how people with a variety of disabilities are able to live a quality lifestyle as the result of technology, social policies, and shifts in public attitudes.
7. Identify a variety of community resources available to assist persons with disabilities achieve their maximum potential and participate fully in all aspects of society.
